May 2011 Classis Meeting – Christian Health Care Center

Classis Hudson met on Thursday, May 12, at the Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff, NJ.

Rev. Howard Vugteveen opened with a devotional reading from Ephesians 3:14-19, encouraging church leaders to keep on remembering the strength of God which empowers the Church.  This is Rev. Vugteveen’s final classis meeting after nearly 30 years of ministry in our area.  Rev. Wes Van Dyk also attended his final meeting after 18 years as the pastor of Faith Community CRC in Wyckoff.  The churches of Classis Hudson wish them God’s rich blessing in their retirement.

Classis approved an increase in the operating fund ministry share amount to $7 per member for the 2011-12 fiscal year.

The churches also affirmed their continued desire that emerging churches (that is, those which do not yet have elders and deacons installed) be present at classis meetings and be a vital part of the discussions that take place.

An interview was conducted with Rev. Henry Cho, who is the pastor of the Evergreen Church in Ridgefield Park, NJ.  Rev. Cho is seeking to affiliate with the CRC, along with his congregation.  This process will hopefully be completed within a year or so.  Classis also heard an update on the affiliation process for Riverside Community Church in Elmwood Park.

The Filipino-American CRC of Jersey City requested permission to formally organize.  Classis approved the request and celebrates the work that God has done in building up the ministry of that congregation since its beginning as a church plant in 1998.

Delegates discussed the agenda for Synod 2011.  A communication requesting clarification on the circumstances surrounding the recent resignations of two top-level denominational officials was approved to be forwarded to this year’s Synod.

Rev. Steve Wolma offered closing devotions on 1 Corinthians 15:58:  “Always give yourselves fully to the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”
